SHEPHERDS OR MOUNTAINEERS

WHO CAME FIRST?

1982

The largest reconstruction and expansion of the lodge was carried out. The building acquired its current visual appearance, greater capacity, and the status of one of the most visited mountain huts.

1952

In February, the lodge was completely destroyed by a devastating avalanche from the Visoka Ponca ridge. This was followed by a period of demanding and solid construction of a new, safer building.

1923

The hut officially came under the auspices of the Slovenian Alpine Association. It was converted into a proper mountain lodge, which became the heart of alpinism in the Julian Alps.

1899

Farmers from Rateče built the original shepherd’s hut, which served as a safe shelter for shepherds and later for the first explorers of the valley below the Ponca peaks.
